About this tool
Different places accept different image formats. An upload form may insist on JPG, a design tool may want PNG, and your website will load faster with WebP. This converter re-saves your pictures in the format you choose, many at a time, using the image encoder that is already built into your browser.
It reads PNG, JPG, WebP, AVIF, BMP, GIF and SVG. Animated GIFs are converted using their first frame. SVG drawings have no fixed pixel size, so they are rendered at their natural size multiplied by the scale you choose; 2× or 4× gives a crisp result for icons and logos. JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a background colour you pick.
About AVIF: every modern browser can open AVIF files, but many cannot create them yet. The tool checks what your browser supports and tells you plainly if AVIF output is unavailable. WebP is the best alternative in that case.
Frequently asked questions
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs entirely inside your browser tab. Your files are never sent anywhere, so it works for confidential images too, and it even works offline once the page has loaded.
Why can't I convert to AVIF?
Saving AVIF requires an encoder that many browsers do not include yet, even though they can display AVIF. If yours lacks it, the tool says so. Choose WebP for similarly small files.
Does converting PNG to JPG lose quality?
JPG uses lossy compression, so a tiny amount of detail is discarded. At quality 85-95 it is not noticeable for photos. For screenshots, text or logos, PNG or WebP usually looks cleaner.
What happens to animated GIFs?
Only the first frame is converted. The result is a still image in the format you picked.
What happens to transparency?
PNG, WebP and AVIF keep it. JPG cannot, so transparent pixels are filled with the background colour you choose (white by default).
