Rotate & Flip Images
Turn, mirror and straighten a whole batch of pictures in one go.
How to use the Rotate & Flip Images
- Drop your pictures on the left or click to pick them. Dozens at a time is fine.
- Choose a quarter turn, a half turn or a custom angle, and add a flip if you want a mirror image.
- Keep "Straighten using orientation data" switched on so sideways phone shots are set upright first.
- Save the pictures one by one, or take the whole set as a single ZIP.
Examples
No rotation, straightening on. Each JPG is set upright from its own orientation flag.
180° with no flip. Every page in the batch is turned the right way up.
Custom angle of -2.5° with a white background behind the four corners.
About this tool
Pictures end up sideways for dull reasons: a phone held at an odd angle, a scanner fed the wrong way round, a camera that guessed wrong. Turning one picture is easy. Turning two hundred is a chore, and that chore is what this page removes. Every picture you add receives the same turn and the same flip, and the set comes back together. The cropper on this site can also turn a picture, but it handles a single image while you crop it.
Phones and cameras rarely rotate the pixels themselves. They store the shot the way the sensor saw it and attach a small orientation flag that says which way is up. Some programs obey that flag and others skip it, which is why one photo can look right in a gallery and lie on its side in an email. With straightening on, the flag is applied for real: the pixels are turned, the flag is dropped, and the picture looks the same wherever it is opened.
Tip: quarter and half turns only move pixels, so a PNG leaves exactly as sharp as it arrived. A custom angle has to recalculate every pixel and leaves four empty corners. Give those a background colour, or save as PNG and keep them transparent.
Frequently asked questions
Do my photos leave my device?
No. Turning and flipping are carried out by the drawing engine inside this browser tab. The page has nowhere to send a picture, and it carries on working if your connection drops after it has loaded.
How many images can I rotate at once?
There is no fixed limit. A hundred phone photos is a normal batch on an ordinary laptop. Pictures are handled one after another, so a very large set simply takes a little longer.
Does rotating a JPG reduce its quality?
Slightly. The picture is decoded, turned and saved again, and JPG throws away a trace of detail on every save. At the default quality of 92 the change is not visible. Pick PNG under "Save as" when you need a lossless copy.
What is orientation data?
A number from 1 to 8 kept in the EXIF section of a JPG. It asks viewers to display the picture turned or mirrored without changing the stored pixels. This tool reads the number, applies it to the pixels and saves a file that no longer relies on it.
Which way does a positive custom angle turn?
To the right, clockwise. Type a negative number to turn left. The canvas grows so that no part of the picture is cut off, and the rotation always happens before any flip.
