About this tool
Large JSON responses are hard to read even when nicely formatted: you scroll through hundreds of lines trying to work out which brace closes which. A tree view lets you fold everything away and open only the branches you care about, with each object and array showing how many keys or items it holds before you expand it.
The question that usually follows is "how do I get to this value in code?". Click any key and the viewer shows its exact path, which you can copy as JSONPath ($.staff[1].roles[0]) for query tools and tests, as a JavaScript expression (data.staff[1].roles[0]) to paste into code, or as a JSON Pointer (/staff/1/roles/0) for patches and schemas. The value itself can be copied too.
The viewer is built for big files. Branches are only drawn when you open them, and long arrays appear in pages of two hundred items, so even files with tens of thousands of entries stay responsive. Search looks through every key and value and lets you jump straight to a match.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between JSONPath and JSON Pointer?
Both describe a location in a JSON document. JSONPath ($.a[0].b) is used by query tools and testing libraries; JSON Pointer (/a/0/b) is a simpler standard used by JSON Patch and JSON Schema.
Can it open very large files?
Yes, within your device's memory. Files of tens of megabytes work, because only the parts you open are drawn on screen. Expand all is capped so it cannot freeze the page.
Does it accept JSON with comments or trailing commas?
Yes. Those common copy-paste problems are forgiven when parsing. Other mistakes are reported with the line and column of the error.
Is my JSON sent anywhere?
No. Parsing, drawing and searching happen in your browser. The last document is kept in local storage so it is still there next time, and you can clear it any time.
