Add Page Numbers to PDF
Number the pages of a PDF where you want them, in the style you want.
How to use the Add Page Numbers to PDF
- Choose the PDF that needs numbering. It opens on your device and stays there.
- Set where the number sits and how it reads, for example "Page 1 of N" at the bottom centre.
- Change the first number, or skip the cover, if the count should not begin on the first sheet.
- Click "Add page numbers" and download the numbered copy.
About this tool
Reports, theses, contracts and scanned bundles are far easier to discuss when every sheet carries a number. This tool writes one onto each page of an existing PDF and touches nothing else: the original text, pictures, links and form fields remain as they were, and the number is added as real text in a standard font that every PDF reader already has.
You decide the corner or centre, top or bottom, and the wording: a bare number, "Page 3", "3 / 12" or "Page 3 of 12". The first numbered page receives the value in the "First number" box and each numbered page after it counts up by one, so a document that continues another can begin at 41, and a skipped cover makes the second sheet page 1. In the "of N" styles, N is the number printed on the last numbered page. A page range limits numbering to part of the file, and the mirror option moves corner numbers to the outer edge of even pages for double-sided printing.
Pages stored sideways or upside down are handled too: the number lands on the edge you see on screen and reads upright. Tip: when a scan has print close to the paper edge, try a top position or a smaller size so the number does not sit on existing content.
Frequently asked questions
Where does numbering start if I skip the first page?
On the second page, with whatever you entered as the first number. Leave it at 1 and the sheet after the cover becomes page 1. Enter 2 if you would rather the cover counted silently as page 1.
What does N stand for in "Page 1 of N"?
N is the number shown on the last page that receives one. With 10 pages, the cover skipped and a first number of 1, the final page reads "Page 9 of 9".
Can the label be in another language?
Yes. Open "More options" and type your own wording, with {n} for the number and {total} for the last number, such as "Seite {n} von {total}". The built-in PDF fonts cover Western European letters. Other scripts cannot be drawn with them, and the tool tells you when that happens.
Is my document uploaded to be numbered?
No. A script in this tab writes the numbers into the file and builds the finished copy in your browser's memory, so a confidential contract never reaches a server.
What if a number lands on top of existing print?
Numbers are drawn over the page, so whatever is already in that spot stays underneath. Move them with the margin setting, switch to another position or reduce the font size until they sit in clear space.
