How to use the Markdown Editor & Live Preview

  1. Type Markdown on the left, or open a .md file; the preview updates as you type.
  2. Use the toolbar or shortcuts (Ctrl or Cmd + B, I and K) for bold, italic and links.
  3. Jump between sections with the outline, or switch to a write-only or preview-only view.
  4. Copy the HTML, or download the document as .md or as a complete .html page.

About this tool

Markdown is the plain-text way to write formatted documents: a # makes a heading, asterisks make bold and italic, and a dash starts a list. It is used for README files, documentation, notes apps, forums and static websites, because the source stays readable and works in any text editor.

This editor shows the formatted result beside your text as you type, using GitHub-style Markdown, so tables, task lists with checkboxes, strikethrough and fenced code blocks all work. The toolbar inserts the right syntax around your selection and removes it again if you press the same button twice, and an outline menu lets you jump between headings in long documents.

When you are done, copy the HTML to paste into a website or email builder, save the Markdown file, or download a complete HTML page with simple readable styles. The preview is cleaned of scripts and other unsafe content before it is shown, so pasting Markdown from elsewhere is safe.

This tool runs entirely in your browser. What you type or open is never sent to a server.

Frequently asked questions

Which Markdown flavour does it use?

GitHub-flavoured Markdown: standard Markdown plus tables, task lists, strikethrough and automatic links. That covers what most sites and README files expect.

Why do my single line breaks disappear?

In Markdown a single line break is treated as a space, and a blank line starts a new paragraph. Tick "Line breaks as typed" to keep every line break, as chat apps do.

Is my document saved?

It is saved automatically in this browser as you type, so it is still there when you come back. Download a .md file to keep a copy elsewhere or move it to another device.

Is the HTML safe to publish?

Scripts, event handlers and other risky code are removed from the output, so the HTML is safe to paste into a page. Links and images are kept.

Is my writing uploaded?

No. Converting and previewing happen in your browser, and the autosave stays on this device.
