About this tool
Many systems, from database imports to mailing tools and data scripts, only accept CSV. This tool reads modern .xlsx files, older .xls workbooks and LibreOffice .ods files, then writes each sheet as a separate CSV so nothing in a multi-sheet workbook is missed.
Cell values are exported the way they appear in the spreadsheet, so dates, percentages and currencies keep their familiar look. If you need raw machine-friendly numbers instead, turn on plain numbers under More options and formatting such as thousands separators and currency symbols is left out. Formulas are exported as their last calculated result.
Tip: if the CSV is headed for a European version of Excel, choose the semicolon delimiter. For tools that split on commas but your data is full of them, tab-separated output avoids quoting headaches.
Frequently asked questions
Is my spreadsheet uploaded?
No. The workbook is opened and converted by code running in your browser tab. Nothing is sent anywhere, so confidential sheets stay on your machine.
What happens to formulas?
CSV can only hold values, so each formula cell is exported as the result Excel last saved for it.
Which file types work?
XLSX, XLSM, XLSB, the older XLS format and OpenDocument ODS. Password-protected workbooks cannot be opened.
How are multi-sheet files named?
Each CSV is named after the workbook followed by the sheet name, for example sales - March.csv.
Why do my dates look different?
Dates are written using the cell's display format from the workbook. If you need a specific format, change the column format in your spreadsheet before converting.
